The son of a New Jersey jazz club owner, alto saxist Richie Cole was born to be a blue blood bebopper. And over the years, he has proved to be a high energy musician who has captivated audiences with his consistently brilliant playing — whether blistering bop orbeautiful ballads.Cole, a Berklee College of Music graduate, joined the Buddy Rich Orchestra in 1969,later caught on with Lionel Hampton’s band, and partnered in the 1970s with EddieJefferson to revolutionize the art of vocalese. He also was music director for the Manhattan Transfer when that group further enhanced and popularized vocalese.
Frequently recorded, Cole has appeared at Carnegie Hall three times as well
as at a
command performance for the Queen of England. He also has served as board chairman
for the National Endowment for the Arts.Cole also is a clinician for high school
and college music programs and is leader of Alto Madness, a four-horn group
that captures the big band sound.
