John L. Worley Jr. past festival performer
A musician, composer, owner of Dancing Sumo Records
and jazz educator and has been a member in many of the Bay Area's creative music
ensembles. Being adept at a multitude of styles, John has played with many national
and international artists in Canada, Europe, Central and North America. A stalwart
sideman for many festival performers, Worley has been featured at the Monterey
Jazz Festival with the Carla Bley Big Band, Don Byron, the Wayne Shorter Sextet
& the Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra, the Asian American Orchestra,
and the Monterey Jazz Festival's tribute to Bobby Hutchinson with McCoy Tyner.
2006 marks Worley's first Monterey Jazz Festival outing as a leader with his
Latin/Straight Ahead ensemble "John Worley and Worlview".
Other performance credits include: Stanley Clarke at Yoshi’s, Sam Rivers Big
Band at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Richie Cole and the Alto Madness Orchestra
at the 2000 TCI San Jose Jazz Festival, Boz Scaggs 2000 Blues Revue, Wayne Wallace
and Rhythm and Rhyme, Louie Bellson, Joe Henderson Big Band, Dizzy Gillespie,
Woody Herman, Quincy Jones, Pete Escovedo, Brilliant Corners Tentet, Jon Jang
and the Pan-Asian Arkestra, Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra and the Turtle
Island String Quartet.
John's debut CD "WorlView" was released in 2003. John also produced Sebastien Lanson's debut recording also on Dancing Sumo Records, "In Transition" in 2004.
John currently teaches privately and coaching sesions at Hope Street Studios and at West Valley Music located in Mountain View, CA. He is a coach and instructor at the Jazz Goes To College summer workshops, Smith Dobson Youth Jazz Festival, In -School workshops run by the San Jose Jazz Society and a member of their Musicians Advisory Board.
John also is a clinician for Bach Stradivarius Trumpets, member of Musicians Union Locals 6 and 153, BMI and the International Trumpet Guild.
